Massive cuts in state educational funding coupled with the recession could have local school districts handing out pink slips in the next year.

Almost a year ago, over 2 billion dollars were awarded to Ohio by the United States Department of Education through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), saving over 7,000 teaching jobs in the state.

ARRA funding will only be used to make up shortfalls in the state budget through fiscal year 2010, meaning layoffs for the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area could hit this spring.Rick Lewis, executive director of the Ohio School Board Association, warns the worst is coming as Ohio is facing an $8 billion dollar hole in its state budget.

“At this point, it’s difficult to envision a budget that will not adversely affect public education, but we’ll work as hard as we can to make certain our schools remain a funding priority for the state of Ohio,” said Lewis.

Despite this hole, Lewis said Ohio could fare better than other states.

“Our governor and legislature have truly placed public education high on their list in these difficult times, especially in comparison to other states,” said Lewis.

Heading into this school year, Lewis explained teaching staffs are probably set for most districts. Once revised revenue projections are released, however, adjustments may be necessary.

For example, Lewis mentioned that unexpected tax cuts proposed by Duke Energy could result in a loss of $40 million for Cincinnati schools which will likely necessitate layoffs for Cincinnati in the near future. Since each district compiles a budget using state and local funds, it is unclear which districts will be affected first.

According to Lewis, it is the responsibility of each individual school board to determine the timing of staff reductions, reasons for such reductions and ultimately which teachers will be let go. In most cases, the least senior teachers are the first to be laid off.

Talawanda School District in Oxford has dodged reductions in force for the time being. According to Dr. Phil Cagwin, superintendant of Talawanda Schools, the district prepared for budget cuts by selectively not filling certain positions that became available through retirement or resignation.

Despite not filling these vacancies, Talawanda was able to hire 20 new teachers for the coming school year. Cagwin said he has been able to hire extremely talented individuals because the applicant pool has grown more impressive due to the competitive job market.

“The impact the tight job market has had on Talawnada is that we have had a very deep pool of very talented teaching candidates to choose from,” Cagwin said.

This uncertainty in Ohio teaching jobs could have education majors and Miami grads leaving the Buckeye state. Miami junior Michaela Malone feels the threat of fewer teaching jobs will be enough to send Miami’s education majors packing.

Marriages Band emerged in Houston in 2010 as a collaborative effort between former members of instrumental post-rock group and folk-pop band. Thefrontline of course wasvocalist/guitarist Ruth’s ethereal, often effects-soaked vocals gently flowing through intense peaks and valleys. They wantedto showcase Ruth’s exceptional guitar playing that is more vivid than the dense architecture of other bandscould allow. Marriages Band departure from purely instrumental rock, too, helped bring her to the forefront, revealing a voice equally fragile and ferocious. They started practicing music in theirgarage, but the the garage door opener broke and they couldn’t get their equipment out, and had to call to fix it. The first album they recorded their first single, released in 2011. Subsequent touring with other band sharpened their vision while introducing the band to a broad cross-section of heavy music fans at the same time, Ruth the vocalist/guitarist issued a solo album in early 2011. Luckily, it earnedpraises from the likes of many fansinthe music industry.

Back in Houston, Marriages Band spent the end of 2011 completing their first album, a timeless 10-song monolith of a debut. Frequently luminous, confident and evocativearethe compositions on their album, the sound of a band focusing on their strengths for great effect. On the opening track of their album, the vocalist wastes no time settling into a catchy tune that runs continuously through your mind using a guitar riff, before unleashing a moody twist of reverb.Ruth’sbreathy and nice husky voice, covered in subtle effects, obtain an irresistible curiosity though what she is saying may not always be clear to some listeners but there’s something to the way she’s saying it. The overflow under the surface is the bassist of Marriages Band who conjures an intimidating rumble from his instrument in glorious contrast to the strings of Ruth’s wailing guitar. The drummer whose daunting presence appears largely responsible for the band’s sound, functions as both an anchor and a bumping wave, holding it all together.

Ruth and her co-band member seem perfectly at ease scaling peaks and heartbreaking valleys, often in a single composition. Many listeners and music artists notice that Marriages Band is fully embracing their skill at doing timeless songs with great epic results. In January 2013,theyhaveembarkedon a co-headlining tour with some famous artist, with the album releasethat followedin April 2014.

Baptism, the first and fundamental sacrament is the gate to the other sacraments. Baptism is the purifying and sanctifying sacrament of rebirth and the means by which its recipients are incorporated into the Church in a bond of unity.

Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation. It is the sacrament that frees a person from original sin and makes that person a member of Christ and His Church, thus being the way to a new and spiritual life. It is administered by immersing the recipient in water or by pouring water on the person’s head “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. One must be baptized before sharing in any of the other sacraments. Baptism is the foundation for all ministry and life in the church, and confers a commitment to follow Christ and spread his message throughout the world. Furthermore, in baptism, one is incorporated into the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and thus participates in the gift of resurrection and eternal life with Christ.

Infants can be baptized soon after birth. At the time of baptism, parents vow to practice their faith and provide a Catholic upbringing for the child. Adults who have never been baptized take part in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), and will typically be baptized at the Easter Vigil. The Catholic Church recognizes baptisms from other Christian denominations that baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Thus, a person can only be baptized once.
